Wednesday 30 October 2013

This afternoon our students had a class with the Grounds for Change from the Calgary Zoo. In the Vista Heights Peace Garden, we had the opportunity to practice discuss patterns that we had made in class and then we explored nature for patterns.

Can you see the pattern in the leaf that we found?

As well, we were able to use our senses to help find words to describe various things such as: the leaves were wet, the evergreen needles were spiky, the bark was bumpy.

The Kindergarten students have been learning many new songs and poems over the last few weeks. Today they listened to the song 'Five Little Pumpkins' and created an illustration by cutting out various shapes and gluing them on their background. We had lots of practice with fine muscle coordination, repeating the ordinal numbers (first, second, third .....) and adding  expression to  the speaking parts "oh my it's getting late", "I'm ready for some fun" and so on.

                                                                                              Five Little Pumpkins    by Tina
Please practice the poem/song with your child.

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate.

The first one said, "oh my it's getting late."
The second one said, "there are leaves everywhere."The third one said, "but we don't care!"
The fourth one said, "let's run and run and run."
The fifth one said, "I'm ready for some fun!"

OOOOhh went the wind
And out went the lights
And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight.

Being a good listener means much more than just hearing what is said with our ears.
Today, our Kindergarten students heard the story of Listening Larry and learned about 'listening' with your eyes, your brains, your mouth, your hands, your heart and your entire body.

Please have your child share with you how they can listen with their whole body.

Yesterday, our students had the Autumn experience of raking leaves into huge piles and jumping, throwing and moving like animals. Afterward, everyone had an  opportunity to record their adventure through an art and writing project. Ask your child to share with you their experience.

The students also hear the following poem, 'The Pile'. Please reread  and discuss 'what they see'.

                                The Pile

The crunch of the leaves as I walk down the street
Lots of different colored leaves beneath my feet

As I walk down the sidewalk, what do I see?
A big pile of leaves just waiting for me!

I start with a trot and get into a run.
I leap in the air up towards the sun.

I dive down fast and fall right in the stack.
The leaves explode as I complete my attack.

The crisp air swirls as I lay on the pile.
And just then I think, "I could lay here awhile."

I hear a loud voice yell from across the street.
"Hey! Get out of there, kid! I just made that yard neat!"

I grab my bookbag, yell "Sorry!" and run
I love autumn, the leaves, the crisp air and the sun.

He can only say one word
Gobble, Gobble, Gobble
